Land Use 2020: A Place for Biodiversity Offsets (May 26 - 28)

Tue May 26 to Thu May 28, 2020, Banff, AB

Offsetting of habitat and biodiversity has become an increasingly common policy tool for environmental protection and resource management. Across Canada those who destroy fish habitat are required by federal policy to create offsetting habitat. Many provinces require that developers who destroy wetlands must make arrangements for replacement wetlands. And regulators at both federal and provincial levels are increasingly requiring development proponents to provide offsets for a wide variety of environmental impacts. But application of these concepts can get complicated, and offsetting can be a first step to novel economic tools like habitat banking and ecosystem service markets.

To raise the level of understanding and dialogue about the promise and perils of biodiversity offsetting the Alberta Land Institute (www.albertalandinstitute.ca) is pleased to present Land Use 2020: A Place for Biodiversity Offsets, Banff, Alberta, May 26-28, 2020. The conference will bring together leading international experts in biodiversity offsetting, policy-makers, practitioners and stakeholders to explore the theory and practice of offsetting and how it can be most appropriately and effectively applied. Program details and registration are available at www.landuse2020.ca. Please take note that until January 31 we are also accepting abstracts from those who wish to present their thoughts and experiences at the conference.

We hope to see you in Banff in May.
