Winter Greenhouse Production workshop

The winter greenhouse production workshop provides an in depth look into modern winter growing techniques for Ontario’s climate and focuses on non-heated and minimally-heated production methods.

Each weekend features an in-class portion on Saturday and a significant hands-on component on Sunday, held at Cedar Grove Farm where these techniques are currently being used successfully.

Course Outline:

1st Weekend, February

• In-class: Introduction, Types of Protected Culture, Supplemental Heat, Q+A

• On-farm: Farm tour, State of the greenhouses at the ten-hour day, Chores, Snow removal, Growth rate for the month of February, Weeding tools and techniques

2nd Weekend, March

• In-class: Bed Design + Layout, Common Tools, Crop Selection, Q+A

• On-farm: State of the greenhouses in March, Transitioning into late-winter/early spring crops, Chores, Managing meltwater, Transplanting early crops (weather permitting), Winter irrigation challenges

3rd weekend, April

• In-class: Day Length, Crop Timing, Planting Methods, Q+A

• On-farm: State of the greenhouses in April, Planting early spring/summer crops, Chores, Prepping the greenhouse for summer (prepping roll-up sides)

4th weekend, May

• In-class: Fertility + Moisture, Harvesting Methods, Snow Management + Removal, Q+A

• On-farm: State of the greenhouses in May, Planting summer crops, Preparing trellising systems

This workshop is suitble for both the seasoned market gardener or back yard enthusiats!

Instructor Scott King is an organic farmer based in Omemee, ON, running Cedar Grove Organic Farm, a small-scale market garden. Cedar Grove specializes in winter greenhouse production in an effort to provide the community with fresh local produce year-round. Scott has been an instructor at Fleming College’s Sustainable Agriculture program. Scott attended the school for Horticulture at the University of Guelph. He has a keen interest in working to improve food access and agricultural education in the Kawartha Lakes community.
