Rocket Mass Heater - Weekend Workshop for a Straw Bale Tiny House Studio Workshop

Sat Nov 3 to Sun Nov 4, 2018, London, ON

Rocket Mass Heater Workshop
for a Straw Bale Tiny House Studio Workshop!
Join us for a Weekend of Resilient Heating Design & Construction

We have a Straw Bale Tiny Studio House that needs some HEAT for the winter! Even though a straw bale tiny home is super insulated and 'easy' to heat; after looking at the various options for off-grid heat sources, we concluded that a Mass Heater would ultimately be the best option for this particular home heating scenario. We will convert an old wood stove by adding clay bricks, earthen mortar, plasters and various refractory materials. The construction of a solid air tight thermal battery for waste heat capture located above and surrounding the wood stove can be adapted to other wood stoves in your area.

• We will also build an outdoor Rocket J-tube stove for the purposes of heating water.

Learn design characteristics where form follows function:

• Basic masonry skills, mixing earthen mortar, laying clay bricks.
• Exploring up, down, angled and side to side venting options for wood stoves and rocket heaters.
• Heater foundation requirements and limitations for building on a wood truss floor.
• Building and testing rocket J-Tube design with firebrick and refractor materials.
• Converting an old wood stove into an efficient Mass Heater.
• Overview of Rocket Mass Heaters and Masonry Heaters from the Past and Present.
• Up-to-Date rules, regulations, Building/Fireplace codes and WETT certification requirements.
• How to build the most efficient top down burning fire.
